Tasmania

Tasmania is Australia's smallest state yet it is deceptively complex.  In October 2005 we spent a month in Tassie and we still didn't get to fit in everything would have liked to.   The diversity of environments in Tasmania is what makes it such a great place for touring.  There are beaches and rugged coastlines, rolling green farmlands, towering forests, beautifully preserved historic towns, highland lakes and huge tracts of wilderness.

The highlights of the trip were our stay at Cradle Mountain Lodge and the stunning walk around Dove Lake,  the perfect day we had for our walk to Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park,  our first couple of days exploring the lovely heritage villages of Ross and Oatlands, and Port Arthur, which was so much more than I remembered it to be.  Of course there's Strahan, and the surprise package of the trip - the lovely little town of Stanley on the north coast.   If there was one thing I could change about the place it would be the weather - it isn't green in Tasmania by accident.
