Thanks for stopping by my website.

I'm a writer, photographer and environmental scientist based on the south coast of NSW.  My interests include natural resource management, outdoor recreation, travel and heritage.

Photography

With a professional background in environmental science, much of my photography is about documenting our environment and the natural elements that comprise it.  These pictures can form a useful record over time, and have educational value to illustrate natural ecosystems, environmental values and threats to our environment.

Old buildings and ruins are another recurring theme in my photography.  For me these are a window to another time, and I feel that it is important to honour their existence before they disappear from our landscape forever.

I also love to travel, and share those travels with family and friends.  Some of my photos are used to illustrate freelance magazine stories, and others become part of my stock collection. I maintain a growing collection of photography relating to travel, heritage and natural environments which are available for commercial licensing. Go to my stock photography page for a small sample.

Journalism and writing

My writing and photography has been published in a number of Australian magazines including Australian Photography, Go Camping Australia, South Coast Style and Wild.  I have also written and researched a book chapter on the exploration and European settlement of the Darling River for the Murray Darling Basin Commission.  I have completed a range of writing assignments for government clients including project reports, case studies, newsletter stories and two annual reports.

Photo restoration and design

Since 2007 I have been offering clients in the Illawarra region a personal service in the digital restoration of their family photos, and the design of high quality photo books to preserve their family memories.  I love seeing my customer's old photographs and hearing the stories behind the photos.

Environmental consulting

I have been involved in managing the natural environment of NSW for over 20 years. Beginning my career with the Department of Water Resources, I soon moved into the position of Wetlands Officer. For eight years I travelled widely throughout the Murray-Darling Basin and South Coast mapping wetlands, collecting data and reporting on their ecological character and condition.  I completed projects that have made important contributions to determining environmental water requirements for wetlands on the Murray River, and for the Lower Darling River.

In 1998 I moved into the emerging field of environmental flows and water planning. As a hydrologist for the South Coast Region of the Department of Land and Water Conservation I played a critical role in defining and testing water sharing arrangements for the Kangaroo River, Coxs River and Sydney Metropolitan Area.

Since commencing my freelance journey in 2007 I have taken on a variety of consulting jobs relating to environmental management.  See my environment page for more details.
